half of which hails from the Santa Maria
Valley sub-appellation. The Santa Maria
Valley, oriented from east to west, allows
chilly winds and fog from the Pacific Ocean
to flow freely, with much of the coolness
settling into the lower-lying basins. This
cooling effect is significant enough to
affect the length of the growing season in
this region, making it among the longest in
the world.
